Is it glorious to die for your country? :: essays research papers
Is it glorious to die for your country?.... This question has been posed to many young people about to embark on war although the answer has usually been yes in response to their country due mainly to the fact that the government instills it in the people of the country to support one's country and one way is to send young abled bodied men into the army. If you were one individual that was not in favour of fighting for your country you would surely become an outcast by the countries people. To avoid ridicule and becoming outcasted by the people living around you, you would join the army just in the thought that you were obligated to for the sole sake of your country. Such thoughts were reinforced by the government promotion of propaganda. Glorifying death is not needed to be taught and should be up to the sole individual. School systems should teach an unbiased point of view of war to enable the child to make their own decision to fight for one's country. Is it Glorious to Die for your Country? Within the education system it was instructed to the teachers to teach the children at a young age during the brink of war to instill that their the life of the country and for them to defend their country against the enemy. Teachers showed being in a army was representing honour and the pride of the country. Guilt was laid on the students who showed rebellion by the teacher. Many times the teacher would try to show a soldier that looks happy and content trying to represent being a soldier makes you happy and content. Many young inexperienced soldiers were sent to training camps near the battle fields that they would soon be sent to fight, for their country and their life. The training camps were situated on similar enviroments that resembled the battle fields of where the fighting would take place. Reinforced displine to the young and ignorant men. Trench warfare is when many soldiers of opposing countries fight against each other across a vast desolate, dirt covered land, and the only sense of cover was to crouch in a usually water logged trench. The sense of death engulfed your very soul, the constant bombardment of shells echo in your mind long after it had ceased. On the Western front conditions

ââ¬ËHappy Birthday, 1951ââ¬â¢ by Kurt Vonnegut Essay
ââ¬ËHappy Birthday, 1951ââ¬â¢ is a short story written by Kurt Vonnegut. The story takes place in Dresden in Germany. The story is essentially about an old man that constantly tries to teach a six year old boy, how he believe the world should be like. The title ââ¬ËHappy Birthday, 1951ââ¬â¢ refers to 24 October 1951 where the U. S. President Harry Truman declares that the war with Germany is officially over. That also elucidate why the soldiers are leaving the city. During the World War II, Dresden was bombarded by British and American aircraft and the whole city was completely destroyed. That explains why the old man and the boy live in the ruins in Dresden. At that time people canââ¬â¢t live in the city without documents, since the boy doesnââ¬â¢t have documents the old man asks him when he wants his birthday to be, the boy answers that he wants it to be tomorrow. The old man decides to give him a memorable present for birthday, as a birthday present he decides that they are going to a peaceful place without war. At his birthday they go to the forest, while they are trying to find a place to sit, the boy suddenly sees a rusted tank, the tank gets the boyââ¬â¢s interest ,and he asks the old man if he can go to it. The old man refuses and then they go deeper into the forest. Eventually they find an exceptional place to sit, and they lay down for a nap. In a while after the old man wakes up alone, the boy isnââ¬â¢t there. The old man panics. In the end the old man finds the boy who was in the tank playing soldier. The main characters in this story are the old man and the boy. The old man feels guilty because he hasnââ¬â¢t been a good father for the boy, he expresses that several times in the story for example in ââ¬Å"I havenââ¬â¢t been a good fatherâ⬠¦ You are supposed to get presents.â⬠(7. 30 ââ¬â 32). Even thought the old man isnââ¬â¢t the parent to the child, he still undertakes the responsibility for not giving him a birthday. The old man hates the war and everything that has something to do with it. Every time the boy mentions something thatââ¬â¢s related to the war, the old man gets upset and panicky. This is also illustrated in this quote. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦He cut the sentence shortâ⬠¦ You shouldnââ¬â¢t be thinking about.â⬠(9. 85 ââ¬â 87) The old man compares the war with chaos and misery. Itââ¬â¢s not directly written but itââ¬â¢s seen between the story lines. The old man is traumatized by the war. He compares the forest with Eden, and he describes the forest idyllic, this is obvious in this quote. ââ¬Å"There! And what do you think of this? Edenâ⬠¦ You can have it.â⬠The story indicates that the old man has experienced a various war through his life. Itââ¬â¢s not directly written but itââ¬â¢s seen through the story lines. ââ¬Å"I can remember â⬠¦ He cut the sentence shortâ⬠. This shows that He has experienced the war, and he also has a vast knowledge of soldiers, due to that the readers can assume that he may have been a soldier in the past. They boy doesnââ¬â¢t have an identity, since he was abandoned by his biological mother and left in care of an old man. Therefore the boy spends his time with the old man, unlike the old man the boy is fascinated by the war and soldiers. The boy has a difficult with understanding the problem with war and soldiers. He doesnââ¬â¢t realize the beauty of the birthday present, because he finds the forest to be lonely and boring, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s very quitâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s lonelyâ⬠, ââ¬Å"I like better in the city, with the soldiers and-ââ¬Å". The boy has also been studying the soldiers, ââ¬Å"Black and red is the engineers â⬠¦Military policeâ⬠(9. 87-90). This quote clarifies his passion for soldiers, which also is characteristic for a boy in his age. The boy also respects the soldiers allot that is illustrated in this quote. ââ¬Å"The old man stepped â⬠¦ To let him pass.â⬠(8. 77 ââ¬â 79). Based on these evidences we can conclude that since the boy was raised in that environment, it has had an impact on his perception of soldiers and war. The story ends abruptly, the boy disappears and the old man finds him playing soldier in the tank. The author clarifies the whole storyââ¬â¢s message by letting it end like that. The general message is that no matter how hard you try to convince a child about how terrible war is, they will not be able to understand it in the same way as you, because it requires experience and interest. In the end of the story the old man gets upset, when he discovers that the boy is missing. He gets upset because he worries about him, he loves him and he also wants the best for him. Therefore the old man tries to be his role model. But the boy doesnââ¬â¢t recognize him as his role model. He looks up to the soldiers instead. In that way a conflict arises between them. It is extremely important to have a role model, a role model you feel comfortable with. Role models are important for us mentally, they guide us through life during our development. We look up to our role models for inspiration and we use this inspiration to know how we should behave. Most of us have a role model, some of us have more than one. For some people it is important to have more than one role model, and for some it is not. The most important thing is to have your own role model and not imitate other people and it doesnââ¬â¢t matter how many role models you have. ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â [ 1 ]. http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/truman-declares-war-with-germany-officially-over [ 2 ]. http://militaryhistory.about.com/od/aerialcampaigns/p/World-War-Ii-Bombing-Of-Dresden.htm

Justice and Vengeance in The Oresteia
In this paper, I suggest that the themes of justice and vengeance are reflected in a progressive movement throughout the trilogy. The never-ending cycle of revenge and vengeance was between not only mortals like Clytaemnestra and Orestes but also between gods for example Apollo and the Furies. The theme of justice and vengeance are important because the play reflects a movement from a time of savagery and revenge and a movement towards civilization and justice. B. Structure of Paper In this paper, I will examine how the themes of justice and vengeance are treated in the Oresteia.I will examine the progress of the trilogy from the savage cycle of bloodshed to a more civilized and justice oriented society. First I will take a look at the foreshadowing of doom in Agamemnon by the Chorus. Then, I will analyze how the cycle of bloodshed continues in the Libation Bearers. And lastly the change from cyclic bloodshed to peace and justice will be discussed through the last play the Furies. C. Body of Paper In the first play Agamemnon, we get the first glimpse of the oncoming fate in the house of Atreus. The sacrificial death of Iphigenia mentioned in Agamemnon 875 was the first spark that caused this cycle of bloodshed to begin and led to the death of the king. The following passage is the words of the chorus following the unfortunate murder of Agamemnon. ââ¬Å"I dread the drumbeat thunder the heavy rains of blood will crush the house the first light rains are over- Justice brings new acts of agony, yes, on new grindstones Fate is grinding sharp the sword of Justice. â⬠Agamemnon 1561-1565 This passage foreshadows not only the coming doom in the house of Atreus but also the intervention of the gods. The line ââ¬Å"the first light rains are over-Justice brings new acts of agonyâ⬠reflects that blood will no longer drizzle but pour from this house until justice is served. It is being implied that Agamemnon was only the first casualty and many are to come which w e later in the Libation Bearers realize is no one other than Clytaemestra and Aegisthus. The sharp grinding of the sword of justice by fate reflects the intervention of the gods who will help bring justice to those murdered. Apollo being the divine oracle that helps Orestes avenge his fatherââ¬â¢s death and the Furies seeking vengeance on maternal murder. This passage provides the best example of the basic theme of the Oresteia, seeking justice through vengeance. The idea of eye for an eye continues to be reflected through the next play the Libation Bearers. This passage also like the previous one can be considered to foreshadow the death of Clytaemestra and Aegisthus. ââ¬Å"And the blood that Mother Earth consumes clots hard, it wonââ¬â¢t seep through it breeds revenge and frenzy goes through the guilty, seething like infection, swarming through the brain. â⬠Libation Bearers 66-69 This quote shows that bloodshed is appeased by only more bloodshed. The fact that blood clo ts hard rather than seeps through signifies that death is something that is not easily accepted in human nature it only induces more revenge. The seething like infection also indicates that this feeling of vengeance will only spread like wildfire until the urge is satisfied. Orestes, with the support of Apollo, is the one reflecting this urge of vengeance while his guilty mother and her lover are the ones to lose their blood next. Clytamestraââ¬â¢s death causes the Furies to hunt Orestes and seek justice for her which leads us to the last part of the trilogy. In Eumenides 485, Athena decides that the case between Orestes and the Furies should be judged by a jury of mortal men. The verdict set Orestes free which enraged the Furies but for their appeasement Athena offers a place in Athens for them which they eventually agree to. Thus the following passage helps us understand how the cycle of vengeance was concluded. ââ¬Å"Come and sped beneath the earth by our awesome sacrifices, k eep destruction from the borders, bring prosperity home to Athens, triumph sailing in its wake. â⬠The Eumenides 1015-1020This quote depicts what Aeschylus was advocating at the end of the Furies. This verse spoken by Athena indicates that justice has been served and no longer should cycles of bloodshed and revenge be at the forefront. Rather the people of Athens should focus on bettering their homeland together and live in peace and harmony. The destruction should be put to better use by conquering foreign lands. The alliance between Athena and the Furies is the triumph being referred to in the end and also indicates that similar achievements should continue to prosper. As we can see the themes of justice and vengeance are at the forefront in the play. The trilogy reflects a progressive movement from revenge to justice. The sacrificial death of Iphigenia was the root cause of conflict between Clytaemestra and Agamemnon and eventually the unceasing cycle of bloodshed. However, t he vengeance of Orestes and the Furies led to a final ruling that helped end the cycle. Although the house of Atreus was reduced to almost nothing through all the bloodshed the cycle helped erase the law of blood for blood and in turn peace and harmony were advocated. The metal pierces his back and side. That man is alive today because Scott risked his life for him. Scott crossed the threshold when he stepped out of cover to retrieve a friend. Literature Assg 2 A Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Literature Assg 2 A - Essay Example also has attempted to show different layers of human existence and how impulsive or biased judgements, blinded by pride or prejudice can lead to catastrophe. The King, like most of the human beings, also believed in false display of affection, whereas, he ignored and disrespected genuine feeling of those who are loyal to him. Thus, Shakespeare, within scope of the play has dealt with an essential human tendency of being attracted towards exhibition or show off or false elaboration of emotions and how an individual, trapped within such falsehood, forgets to appreciate and acknowledge genuine human feelings, consequently leading to his tragedy. Thesis Statement: The two daughters of the King surely have a major role to play in deepening the tragic plight of their father kin King Lear. However, the seeds of tragic and painful ending of the King were already sowed during Learââ¬â¢s desperate rejection of Cordeliaââ¬â¢s true affection, honesty and respect for him. Thus, besides holding the elder daughters responsible for his catastrophe, it is also important to consider his false choices, which he made out of prejudiced observation, as catalysts for his tragic end. A close and critical study of the four major Shakespearean tragedies, namely, Hamlet, King Lear, Othello and Macbeth, would clearly show that in each of these dramas the dramatist has exhibited certain common themes and a specific sequential approach to evoke the sense of tragic aesthetics. Hamletââ¬â¢s tragedy is caused due to his dilemmatic nature and the existential crisis that he suffers from, in case of King Lear, the kingly pride, a stubborn sense of supremacy and overdependence to others, in this case on children, to decide the course of his life, have resulted in his fall. Finally, his realization regarding the wrong choices he made evoked in him a philosophical self that helps him to look deep in reality, keeping aside his trivial pride. Othello cannot escape his tragic plight due to the conjoint
